Local Foods: Organic Deck Garden update (7-23-06) – before and afters

Here is the latest update on our organic deck garden here in central Massachusetts. You may remember that this all got a very late start but we do what we can!

Why do I not just plant in the ground? I have Rambo rodentia and rabbits who would eat everything up in a flash if I gardened in the ground (I have been there once before, I don’t need that aggravation).

  I thoroughly enjoyed the tour of your garden, since I had one of my own before moving to Las Vegas last year. I had forgotten what “wet earth” smelled like and the feeling of anticipation of a harvest. Most of all I miss my basil plants, and the home made pesto.

  bx: i am glad you enjoyed it! Sorry that things are not garden-friendly in your new home! Maybe you can do some hydroponic basil inside? I LOVE fresh picked basil!

  Nika, everything looks SO fresh! I’d be extremely happy if I had a veg garden like yours, even though I scream (and run away) every time I find worms!

  Keiko: LOL! I got this image of a grown person screaming and running away I have never seen an earthworm in these pots (I would not mind that tho, they keep the soil loose) but I have seen these little tiny white ones that gross me out big time. I just have to wash the lettuce ALOT and try not to think too much about it.

  When I grew beets in the ground not only did we have chipmunks we also had grubs, those are 10Xs worse than worms! yuck!
