The chaos of blogging while a mother
Posted on Feb 15 in Meta Talk, Off Topicby NikaPrint

Yeah, there is a very good reason why I didn’t have kids until AFTER I was done with grad school. Even the very simple process of viewing my traffic or, god forbid, writing this blog entry is surrounded by the profound chaos of children who think that mommies should never blog, period.
If you are a parent, you know that you will have a quiet household, all kids profitably occupied, and then when you pick up the phone and soundlessly dial a number, BANG, all kids rush to you and demand all sorts of things.
What sorts of things might my children (especially the one in the pink tutu you see above) demand upon my sitting down to the computer?
Try:
- Elephants
- to be smaller
- to be bigger
- the mouse
- a new sippy cup of milk (while the current is still full and frosty cold)
- a different TV channel
- the first TV channel that you just changed it from
- hugs
- no hugs
- to use the computer
- to put the tutu on
- to take off the tutu
- to wear her baby brother’s clothes (inexplicable really)
- “may I be a hamster, mommy”
- another elephant and possibly an echidna, just to be difficult
I am very good at typing with one hand now. I can bottle feed the baby with my chin while I photoshop photos and upload them to flickr.
Yeah, in theory, I could do all this sometime in the night, say 3 am, but when the kids go to bed I am an inarticulate zombie.. I mean, Mom.
ok, I just thought I would share that.

I think with motherhood, it a given that we need like eight arms. LOL I am right there with you! If its not more milk, changing baby clothes or diapers, or the million other things that these little guys come up with, its almost impossible to find time for yourself. I have found that when they were sleeping I can get a little computer time. I found this cute website that has the cutest clothes ever for girls and boys! If you like you can browse it! Just passing it along! Enjoy! http://www.sandboxcouture.com
Oh, I can so relate. My 5 year old is currently counting… he’s at 300 and is demanding me to listen. Fun stuff, listening to someone to count!
Kristen: oh man! By now he is likely to 500 huh? So cute. Just a FYI – I have tried to load your site three times (I use firefox) and its not loading correctly
For all the sticky fingers, spilled milk, piles of laundry, and cheerio crumbs, there are the paper valentines, sloppy kisses and chubby-armed hugs. As a mom of six whose youngest is now 11, as crazy as it sounds, I find myself longing for those days.
For my younger friends with infants who keep them awake I remind them that all too soon their children will be sullen 17-year-olds who keep you awake all night waiting for them to walk safely in the door.
You’re doing a great job and an outlet like blogging helps you keep your sanity even if you do have to hunt and peck with one finger!
Deborah: all so true, thanks for the real-reality check
. I have one that is 10 going on 18 so I get to taste that end of it too. I admire that you were able to have 6 kids, 3 is really whipping my behind. Three is so much more than two somehow.. I can NOT imagine six.
Ah, Nika.
I reach.
With the help of a laptop desk (which looks like a hospital bed tray thing, but nicer because it is wood instead of metal, and it tilts so I can reach the laptop) I have managed to write while breastfeeding the five month old.
I have two.
I cannot imagine three.
Keep up the good work, both with the blogging and the mommying.
