Colombian Star Rising - Food Network gets a latino clue

February 22nd, 2007 · 6 Comments

Ingrid Hoffman

Some interesting news about Ingrid Hoffman, the Colombian star of the Delicioso TV food show that I first learned about from Elaine at Latina Viva.

The Food Network has signed Hoffman to a multi-year contract to do a cooking show that certainly will explore Colombian Cooking. (See the press release here - its a PDF) Going by comments that were offered in Elaine’s review of Delicioso, the Colombian cooking of Hoffman will likely be more of an American-ized sort of fare versus “real” Colombian cooking (of which you see a lot here on my blog, try this section for various recipes and how-2 guides). This is about Food Network’s speed, fine with me. Just dont think you are getting the “real” sabor or flavor of Colombia.

I am open to the possibility that she will show “real” colombian cooking.. It would be great to see her up to her elbows in masa harina: making empanadas, arepas, or tamal. Heck, I would love to see her making a sancocho or, god forbid, chicharrones!

Somehow, I fear that may not be in the offing, though I will give her the benefit of the doubt.

Ms. Hoffman has built a big following by essentially being a VERY busy woman. Besides being the fetching star of the Univision channel’s cooking show Delicioso, she does the following:

Appears on Univision’s Despierta America (Oh the wacky world of hispanic TV. It takes a bit of getting used to)

Contributes to Buenhogar (A spanish “Good HouseKeeping” if you will)

Publishes a bi-weekly syndicated column in the Rumbo (chain of Spanish language daily newspapers)

I look forward to some fresh Latina input at the Food Network. Bobby Flay (who does New Yorker-Southwest. Ever see those Pace Picante Sauce commercials about sauce made in New Yawk City?, yeah its like that) is so immensely over-exposed, he needs a break. Ok, I need a break but its always nicer be charitable, right?

Now, if the Food Network would show more Rick Bayless, I might tune in, when I am not watching my TIVO Bourdains that is.

Pues, Viva La Latina!

Watch Ms Hoffman and check it out.

It will be interesting to see what she comes up with and how her show goes. I always like seeing someone new and different on the scene… hope she succeeds.

Kristen: I agree. I am crossing my fingers that they do a good job. I know it might be innapropriate but I will feel embarassed if her show sucks.

Its the same thing with Cat Cora on Iron Chef.. I just can NOT watch her because she makes me cringe. (My daughter adores her so I try not to say TOO much but *sighs*) Why? Because she has made some pretty super dog-dishes that the judges didnt like and her win-loss record is just atrocious. Anymore its not Iron chef but “Beat Flay” night. Anyways, Cora makes me nervous.. I hope Hoffman doesnt too :-/

    Nika,
I tried to watch Simply Delicioso today and only could take the first 10 minutes of it. She seems to talk down to the audience, it’s was awful. I hope Food Network gets rid of her she awful!

Jennifer: yikes! I have been running around dealing with getting my garden ready for a thunderstorm that I totally forgot about that .. I captured it to mu PVR so I am gonna check it out later.

Its too bad she came off that way! I have never watched her before so I have no idea what to expect but I didn’t expect that.

    Thanks for the heads up!
