One must be vigilant in sourcing feed for their own animals (chickens, goats, etc.) to ensure there aren’t any protein boosters like melamine being added here in the US…. or imported from Mexico, that may be importing “inputs” from China. The “Truth in Labeling” movement is making a very tiny bit of headway in this respect but it will be quite some time before we get a complete paper-trail on the foods imported here. The corporate moguls don’t want us getting that information.

Read this patent carefully and you’ll see that melamine is definitely in American fertilizer, which is more or less totally unregulated. This entry, by the way, was fantastic (although I’m not sure localizing protects us as much as you’d think–I mean, what if you localize near a coal fired power plant?)

Rebecca: thanks for the cite. I am betting there are quite a few similar studies. (I just have not done a pubmed search for them, sure there are lots).

Regarding the FDA and actual ethics.. yeah, the two should go in the same sentence. Its sad and a direct consequence of the Bush administration (and the Grover Norquist School of Government)

Dawn: you are very welcome. He may be right on some levels (well, actually he is right, the doping was done deliberately) but the motivation is not so much, I think, to “get us” but to pass off crap product for a higher price (ultimate capitalism).

Melanie: indeed. Mostly tho, do not be afraid – work towards eating and preparing whole foods sourced near you so that you know you are not getting tainted by products (dried milk solids egg solids proteins, gluten, etc from China)

Indeed! Every day I hear even more coverage about how the chinese officials are admiting that it was an “open secret” and that they have been covering too.. I have zero faith in their exports and those daily reports reaffirms my zero faith.
