Our Baby Oh is growing up!

You may remember my mentioning in a previous post (Baby Oh: 1 in 94) that Baby Oh (Toddler Oh now) was diagnosed as being on the autistic spectrum.

He is getting ABA therapy (autism) and he has made ENORMOUS strides in the past 3 weeks. He has gone from nonverbal to spontaneous whole sentences.

Amongst other things, today we tackled bath time (water). Baby Oh was able to overcome his fears! He LOVED it. I didnt include the naked shots (didnt shoot any naked) but he got the full experience!

In recent times, Oh would have a fit with water and erupt in massive fountains of puke at bath time. Today we made HUGE gains – took 2 ABA therapists you see in the set above.

100% water, 0% puke, 100% fun!

ABA therapists are the child whisperers, they are angels.

Drum roll, please – I am baaaak!

I have been out of touch on all my blogs and pretty much in real life (except for DailyKos and twittering). Sorry to be so slow posting here – hope it gets better right quick.

So, I just got back from San Diego for a conference that I was running and I found myself without a camera (didn’t want to lug it) but still wanting to shoot. So I was reduced to shooting with the dinky camera on my mac laptop, go figure. (keep this in mind as you look at shots in this post, please!)

(Hard Rock Hotel in the Gaslamp district of San Diego, CA)

I stayed at the Hard Rock hotel the first night.

Was a mind warp considering that I am not hugely into music and this place is 100% about music, the scene, rockers, groupies, and living the “style”. My life, well, its diametrically opposite. I wake to the sound of roosters and goats and then I run off to work before the kids awake to return later in the evening to more relative quiet and exactly 0% celebrity.

I SWEAR I saw Britney Spears get out of her limo and walk through the lobby.

It happened with no fan fare – and with quite a posse, talk about lots of staff.

I knew that supper was NOT going to be at NOBU (oh the torture) here in the hotel – I had to plunk down $250 MORE money at registration here – they require this deposit because of “the nature of their clientele” according to the young woman at the registration desklet.

I gave her a dead fish stare but didn’t go into just how absurd the thought was of ME trashing my room. I could not hear much in the registration area anyways – VERY loud music and also this ginormous video wall behind the registration area that was enveloping us in glaring intense LED light that flickered and strobed and overwhelmed my poor jet lagged self.

(Rockin Baja in San Diego in the Gaslamp District)

I took a stroll through the gas-light district and observed: that the restaurants off of 5th ave had a New Orleans restaurant dive vibe (hard to explain unless you have been to New Orleans and wandered the streets), it felt like Melrose in LA – lots of pretty people on the street and cruising, quite a few homeless begging and zero people seemed to see them.

I got take out from a place called Rockin’ Baja Coastal Cantina – had a key west sort of vibe inside, welcoming in a boozy sort of way.

I ordered a lobster corn chowder and turf and surf taco combo – delish but WAY too much food!

(Lobster Corn Chowder)

This lobster corn chowder was DREAMY and very rich. This would have been enough for me!

(Surf and Turf tacos)

The next morning I awoke at my normal time which meant 4 am in San Diego. Snagged breakfast downstairs in the hotel at a place called MaryJanes Coffee shop. Great food – scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, applewood smoked bacon, and a biscuit. They had real strawberry jam, nice touch. Very friendly staff. Sat and listened to Bob Dylan and watched the various people flow through, young guys, older business types, firefighters.

I shot this delish breakfast that was WAY too much food – again! – (which I had to take some to go and even then could not finish it) and also a bit around the restaurant. Its just a tiny slice – what you don’t get is the loud music, loud patrons, flat screens at many of the tables. Its a nice place to caffeine up and get charging for the day.

(MaryJanes Coffee Shop at the Hard Rock Hotel)

The ambiance = just off the stage at a rock concert.

(High tech coffee shop dining)

Here are a few scary shots of the hotel room – great room, poor shots.

(Shower)

I stayed at the Hard Rock one night and then it was on to the Manchester Grand Hyatt. Beautiful hotel but I would recommend that you boycott this hotel until the owner “Papa Manchester” repudiates his obscene, VERY vocal and well monied offense against gay marriage in California (Proposition 8). If you like what you see re: photos but can’t stomach his position – be sure to let them know you chose a DIFFERENT hotel.

(Slept like a baby)

I had no choice but to stay here – my work booked it. Its a fantastic hotel – simply divine service and I slept like a baby. I would recommend it but …. well you know.

So now, I am home and I have a pretty serious blog-backlog!

I will be working my way through that, several reviews of some great cookbooks and food books coming up.

Here is a pic that I will be sharing at my Humble Garden blog with some news. This is a sneak preview.

In the spirit of my last post, regarding the split between our blog world and the “real” world, I thought I would share a bittersweet moment in my life.

As I was growing up, my engineer father was always coming up with ideas that he wanted to get patented. I got this message that getting a patent was of great importance and something to really aspire to. Weird huh? I guess its better than emulating something like a beauty queen or basketball player.

I went on to become a scientist. The summer after I defended my dissertation my dad and I drove from Virginia to Los Angeles for my first postdoctoral fellowship. It was a grueling and crushing trip, not because of the miles but because my father could not even remember my name at times and he grew more and more disoriented. I got half way across the country and called my mom in desperation, asking her if she realized that my dad had Alzheimers. She didnt know, she was in denial I guess.

For the next 8 years my father descended into the hell of early onset Alzheimers and then died at the age of 61.

So, when I finally got my first patent a few weeks ago, as you see in the photo above, it made me very sad because I do not have my father to celebrate this experience with. He would have been so fantastically proud.

I am proud to be his daughter.

Even tho we share some of ourselves here in the blog world, much is left off (I try not to bore you with my stuff!). When something like this happens, the terrible dichotomy between the virtual universe we create online and the real stuff that happens offline glares out and reminds us that we need to work hard to experience all of our life, not just the stuff in our heads.

This last August 22nd, my middle child turned 4 years old.

Life becomes very full when you have three kids, one being all of 10 months, and you homeschool and you are dedicated to starting a new direction in your working life.

So full that time zips past ferociously fast.

So fast that when you look at the newly 4 year old you get a flash back to the pain of labor and delivery and the heart wrenching experience of watching her be resuscitated, dragged from the brink of death.

It seems like yesterday that she was born and here she is a very spicy little 4 year old girl who is about to start preschool.

We threw a Spongebob/ Dora the Explorer birthday party for her. I priced out a Spongebob Squarepants cake at the grocery store but they wanted $21.00 for the crazy thing!

I made my own non-spongebob presents-stacked-up cake and put so many candles on the thing that I was sort of fearful it might burst into a bonfire at some point, taking the spongebob plates, cups, napkins, and plastic tablecloth with it!

Baby Oh, being the sensible little man he is, was quite concerned about this odd practice we were partaking in, setting the dining room on fire.

I also made a little cake just for KD so she got to blow it and the big one out. They had magic relighting candles so the blowing out happened over and over.

This is a good thing for kids and great for moms who want to shoot it (over and over to get the shot).

Many presents appeared for the party. I have to confess that, while it looks like excess, its almost all school stuff. I am a bad party mom to pass off school supplies as presents! Thing is, she adores clothes so she was excited about her new clothes-as-presents and her new Dora backpack and Dora tennis shoes and pretty pink butterfly rain poncho.

At one point, we moved the party outside to beat on a Spongebob Squarepants pinata I had loaded with lunch snacks and raisins (a few chocolate kisses too). Alas, this pinata was politically correct and was not rigged for bludgeoning.

No, Spongebob had these streamers hanging down, between his stubby little legs.

The idea is that kids each pull one streamer and then finally one kid gets the one streamer attached to a drop-open patch on Spongebob’s behind.

The most disturbing part is that I had open and loosen and generally widen the “behind” opening. Spongebob and I never knew each other very well and after this, well, he doesn’t spare me a kind look.

With a little help from Q, Spongebob gave up the goods.

We ended the festivities with explosive little things that blow out streamers. We will be picking that stuff up out of the backyard for some time.
